Preparing for Your First Fertility Consultation

Doctor consultation in a warm clinic setting

A little preparation makes your first visit calmer and far more productive. Here's what to bring, what to expect, and the questions worth asking.

The first fertility visit is part conversation, part medical history, part planning. Coming prepared turns it from intimidating to empowering.

What to Bring

Any previous test reports (blood work, ultrasounds, semen analysis), a list of medications and supplements, a record of your last 3–6 menstrual cycles, your vaccination history, and details of relevant family medical history. Both partners should attend if possible.

What the Doctor Will Ask

Expect questions about your menstrual cycle, sexual history, previous pregnancies, lifestyle, occupation and stress levels, family history of fertility issues, and any chronic conditions. Honesty here directly shapes the accuracy of your plan.

Likely First-Visit Tests

For women: AMH, FSH, LH, thyroid panel, prolactin and a transvaginal ultrasound. For men: a semen analysis. Many clinics arrange these on the same day to save you a return trip.

Questions Worth Asking

What might be causing our difficulty? What tests would help us know more? What are our treatment options — from least to most intensive? What success rates apply to people like us? What costs should we expect? Knowing what to ask puts you in the driver's seat.

There is no such thing as a silly question in a fertility consultation. The clinics worth your trust are the ones that welcome every single one.
